What Interesting/Important Happened in 1970?

The year 1970 meant the closing of one more very interesting decade in our lives.

Is that the year of your birth as well?

In that case, you have one more good reason to read the article below cause we bring you some fun facts about some of the biggest highlights from back then.

Mariah Carey Was Born

Or was it 1969 when Songbird Supreme came to the world? In fact, nobody knows for sure, except Mariah herself. But, it doesn’t really matter that much cause we’re good with celebrating any year we’re told to for bringing us one of the most beautiful voices on Earth.

So, here today we’re going to admire her a bit more for her enormous talent and success. Did you know that Billboard named Mariah Carey the best female artist in the US of all time based on her album and song chart performances?

She doesn’t only sing flawlessly and effortlessly in whistle register and through all five octaves, but her signature as a songwriter or a producer is behind most of her songs as well. Officially, she is the most successful artist of the 1990s, and unofficially she’s made our days of the 1990s with her music.

Simply, imagine what kind of talent and skill you need to have to win five Grammies, ten American Music Awards, nineteen World Music Awards, and fifteen Billboard Music Awards!

The First Earth Day Was Celebrated

It is clear that each and every day we have to remember to help our planet to become green, healthy, and strong again. However, when April 22 comes, at least do some little thing to make Earth a better place for living, not only when it comes to us, but many other species as well.

Even in the 1960s, people were worried about our environment as it was getting dirtier and stinkier. And then, in 1969, a massive oil spill happened in Santa Barbara too.

After that, it was finally obvious that something in the world has to change. So, it started by pronouncing April 22 for official Earth Day back in 1970, mostly thanks to Senator of the US Gaylord Nelson.

During the first Earth Day in 1970, more than 20 million Americans crowded the streets in order to demonstrate against the global pollution that more than 100 years of industrial development caused.

The Beatles Released Their Final Album

If you had lived back in the 1960s and you had been the Beatles fan, the year 1970 would have been such a tragic year for you. Now it’s been more than 50 years since one of the most popular guys in the music industry disbanded, and 1970 was the year when they released their final album.

Let It Be topped both the US and the UK charts, as well as many others around the world. Almost 12 million copies were sold only in the US!

Yeah, it’s all great, but its release meant the ending of Beatlemania and of the existence of one of the greatest bands ever. Well, their manager Epstein had died, McCartney began to dominate a bit too much, Lennon found his happiness with Yoko Ono, so they probably easily saw it coming.

But, anyhow, we were left behind to lack some more of their good music.

Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin Died

The year 1970 was tragic for two more reasons – Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, some of the most iconic musicians of the last century and of all time died, both at the age of 27!

Although he passed away so young, Jimi Hendrix managed to do for music what no one before had not even tried, and hardly anyone did in the future. Simply, he changed the rock scene. Therefore, today he is „arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music“ according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and according to all of us.

At the moment of his death, he just got himself in the spotlight, and his career was just about to get started at its best form. He released his debut album in 1967 but started to play guitar much much earlier – at the age of 15.

Believe it or not, he was a self-taught musician and learned to play by ear. And how did he learn to play with his teeth or behind his back – we won’t ever find out. However, what we do know is that he was left-handed, so he always used to play his guitar upside-down!

Unfortunately, an intoxication with barbiturates took Jimi’s life away.

When we say blues, we mean Janis Joplin. Her unique voice had a unique ability to leave everyone speechless. But, unfortunately, just like Jimi Hendrix, Joplin’s life and career ended before they even started, at the early age of 27 in 1970.

It was well known that her lifestyle was pretty careless and free. Because of that fact, even drugs were familiar to her. She died of an accidental heroin overdose.

Actually, during her life, Joplin was more bullied by her peers than she was appreciated for her art. The first solo album she recorded in 1969 named I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama! didn’t bring her any worshiping and fame before her death.

The true appreciation for her music came, in fact, with her album Pearl, which was released after she died, in 1971. It was the last project she was working on during her life and she left it unfinished, so her producer finalized it posthumously.

The First Commercial Flight of Boeing 747

Once upon a time, people dreamt about constructing something to help them fly through the sky. And then, in 1970 they even got to the point of having a plane that could carry up to 550 individuals during the flight! They named it Boeing 747.

This Jumbo Jet’s first commercial flight ever was from New York to London in January 1970. There were 18 crew members and 332 passengers!

Till 2007, Boeing 747 was the largest plane in the world, with a height of up to 20m and a wing surface area of up to 550 m2! Plus, its weight was up to more than 200 000 kilos, and not including a single passenger or a crew member!

Summary

So, an interesting year just like the whole previous decade, wasn’t it?
