Leonardo DiCaprio Was Born

We all love him so much that we will hate Rose forever for not making some room for him on the dry doors in the middle of the freezing ocean. Well, our beloved Jack was born in 1974, just like you!

Yes, we will always remember DiCaprio for his great roles in Titanic, The Great Gatsby, Blood Diamond, Inception, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, and many other remarkable movies, but his beginnings were pretty modest, just like any other celebrity’s.

He appeared for the first time in the Bubble Yum commercial in the late 1980s and he was sweet and charming right away. If there’s any chance you don’t believe us, click here, and take a look yourself.

But then, while he was only a teenager, his career turned out to be all but modest. At 19, DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award at the same time for his unbelievable acting in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape from 1993.

Everyone thought back then that it was only a matter of time when he will win an Oscar. However, that time didn’t come until he entered the fifth decade of life. Admit it, you were delighted when The Revenant finally brought him the famous award, just like us!

Penélope Cruz Was Born

Another person we just can’t help loving was born in 1974 – Penélope Cruz!

While she was still a young girl, Penélope could never imagine she would one day become the first and only Spanish actress in history to both be nominated for and win an Oscar, or, even more, that she will be the first Spanish actress to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

On the contrary, she studied ballet for almost ten years and thought that dancing will be her life. However, unexpectedly, music led her to become a model in the Spanish band Mecano’s music video for the song La Fuerza del Destino. She was only 15 years old.

And then, step by step, she got her debut role in the movie Jamón Jamón in 1992 – she was still 17.

So, that’s how it all started for Cruz. But it wasn’t only the new profession that was started for her. Back then, Penélope met Javier Bardem for the first time in her life, and many years later, here they are in a happy marriage.

As the matter of fact, he’s also the first Spanish actor ever to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The First Stephen King Novel Was Published

If you love to read and you’re not afraid of horror stories, Carrie by Stephen King may be one of your favorite novels. Well, congratulations then, this book was published in 1974, the year of your birth!

Actually, King wrote three more books before Carrie, but it was the first one to be published, and it was a great success from the very beginning.

But Carrie wouldn’t have happened at all if King’s wife Tabitha hadn’t found some pieces of paper in the garbage one day in the past. Stephen wrote the shower scene, and he didn’t find it good enough for a world to read it.

Oh, he couldn’t even possibly dream that the work that he was ashamed of at first would be sold in millions and millions of copies around the world in the future.

It even got several movie adaptations, including the one from 1976, and the one from 2013. If you haven’t seen them yet, go ahead and do it, and don’t forget to come back to tell us which one did you like the most.

Lucy the Skeleton Was Found

Back in 1974, everyone was amazed by this news – a skeleton of a woman that lived more than 3 million years ago was found in Ethiopia.

Actually, it wasn’t a skeleton as a whole, but there was about 40 percent of the body. Anyhow, this discovery was very, very important.

Have you ever thought about why it was named Lucy? The story goes like this – in the expedition camp there in Ethiopia, one song was played over and over again. It was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles.

However, in Ethiopia, they named the skeleton – Dinkinesh, which means „you are marvelous“.

Kiss Released Debut Album

Are you a rocker in your heart and soul? If that’s the case, you should celebrate the year 1974 not only for your birth but for releasing of Kiss, the debut album of one of the greatest rock bands ever – Kiss.

Maybe someone expected some romantic content and performance from them when they first got to hear their name,  but the reality was so much different. Just take a look at one of the most legendary moments from the band’s concert in 1975 and you’ll see.

Almost all of the songs from the album were written by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. According to the band members and producers, it took only two weeks to record and mix all of the ten songs from the album!

But, although they became planetary popular sometime later, there were only approximately 75 000 copies sold when it comes to their debut album.
